Dining al Fresco.... Local, Fresh and Delicious!

The least likely of evenings... turned out to be a culinary event!! Having passed this delightful looking eatery a couple dozen times....I decided it was time to stop and checkout the dinner fare! (and boy was I glad I did!) :)

Mike and Anne's is located in a very quaint South Pasadena neighborhood.... on Mission Street. This bistro has a perfect outdoor seating area, as well as a very inviting interior. As the weather was warm but crisp, we took a seat outside and our very delightful server, Emily came to explain the specials of the day and offer us a drink.

We ordered a Cucumber Gimlet... a drink made with muddled cucumber and lime... I chose the vodka version, since I'm not the biggest fan of gin! Ode to the bartender... quite the delicious concoction! (If only I could get that recipe!!)....LOL!

For an appetizer, we went with one of the daily specials; Spicy Tomato-Herb Risotto with Crispy Calamari. It was topped with black olives, thin slices of red-onion and micro greens. This dish was the perfect starter, bursting with flavor!! The sauce was a bit spicy, but ever so delicious!! They really should consider keeping this on the menu... I would come back more often to have this as a small bite with a few drinks!!

For our entree... we chose to stay in the "sea" mode and ordered one dish from the daily specials and the other from the regular menu: Red Snapper, which was pan-seared with Grilled Corn Grits, Chinese String Beans, Fennel in a Sun-dried Tomato Nage with Olives. I must say, I was quite impressed by the fusion of flavors the chef used... the tomato broth was bright and light, and though the fish was very fresh and cooked to perfection, this dish, actually its veggies, could stand alone as a vegetarian special, given the outstanding fusion of the veggies over the grits and the broth! Truly delicious!

Then there was the Miso-Sake Braised Black Cod.... cooked to perfection with the skin ever so crispy, it was served over a bed of Edamame, Asparagus and fused with Basil and Scallions... still sitting in some of the sake marinade... light, airy... the fish melts in your mouth at every bite! This is the perfect entree especially for those watching their waistline... but not compromising on flavor and quality!

Considering that we were already pretty full at this point... we still could not resist the offerings in the dessert menu so we went for the Chocolate!! A Warm Nutty Brownie with Hazelnuts, Pecans and Walnuts served over a bed of fresh berries and a scoop of Vanilla Ice cream... the kind of dessert that brings you to that place of appreciating all things simple, yet delicious and decadent! The tartness of the berries complimented the chocolaty goodness of this amazing little brownie!! Somehow... you could never go wrong with chocolate! (Although I will have to say... I MUST try the Brioche Bread Pudding, next time! That was really screaming "Elle-Special"!) :)

For all you Angelenos and locals... this is the perfect spot to break out of the monotony of eating out. Offering great ambiance in a nice-casual setting. Very well prepared food, wonderful fusion of textures and flavor... I will have to say, Mike and Anne's will be one of my new favorite "go to" places!

A special thank you to our server Emily, who put the "cherry-on-top" of the evening's meal, her lovely and cheerful spirit truly complemented our experience!!

This LA eatery should be on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives!!

To all those foodies in the know and to all fellow Food Network junkies.... here is a place that Guy Fieri needs to visit and film a segment in!! Great quality and fantastic tasting food, great prices... in the most unlikely location! Calling all Angelenos.... a fast lunch (or dinner) never tasted this good!! The place: EL PESCADO MOJADO SEAFOOD GRILL... in this case the Sunset store!

Owned by the wonderful Galvez family... El Pescado Mojado serves up traditional Mexican dishes. It is most definitely a healthier alternative to most "fast food" or family-owned restaurants in the city. A generous menu allows their customers to come back repeatedly, without having the same thing every visit!! More importantly, everything is made to order, raising the standard and level of quality!

On a lazy Sunday evening... this is the perfect "to go" option for a night in with friends if you don't feel like doing dishes... or simply don't have the time!
I did just that... and here are some of the delicious treats we got to sample that evening:

Queso Fundido... (a broiled cheese appetizer)... A must for all you cheese lovers!! Monterey Jack cheese melted.... a cheese brulee, if you will!! Gooey, oooey, cheesy goodness! Try it!

Ceviche... one word... YUM!!! (Is that really a word? LOL).... there were two kinds... shrimp and white fish.... I preferred the white fish; they were both delicious, I just prefer white fish ceviche. Perfectly seasoned... just the right amount of citrus... hard to beat the quality and value of this ceviche!

Pair the ceviche with some super fresh guacamole... (the real kind... not the processed, watery stuff you get at a lot of other places!)... you will bite into the chunks of avocado... and the chips?? Freshly made here!!.... and did I mention the salsa??? This salsa brings most others to shame!!

Skewers... Chicken, Beef and Mahi... oh my! They were all flavorful... my favorite was the Mahi! Served with a delicious seasoned white rice and a side of pinto beans... the perfect meal!

Last but not least.... Camarones a la Diabla (Spicy Devil Shrimp).... I have to confess, I was speechless! This is the kind of dish that real foodies live for... no kidding! Authentic.... as good as mom would make! This dish is five star, in my humble opinion!! Also served with white rice and beans on the side.... not the typical "fast food" order! Guy Fieri... you must come try this!!

The great news about this family-owned business... there are three locations to choose from:

1701 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
610 S. Rampart Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
11530 Telegraph Rd., Santa Fe Springs, CA

For those of you on a wellness kick or on low carb/low fat diets... the options are the same. Most of the food is grilled...stick with those options and skip on the tortilla chips and rice. The seafood is extremely fresh... and a small indulgence with this guacamole is ok... there are no additives, and you still get all the naturally creamy goodness from an avocado! Did I say FRESH??? :)

By the way, there is something to be said about who you know... because you read about it here, Pescado Mojado is offering all ELLE LIVING readers and followers a discount on your next visit!! Click on the coupon link for the special offer, print it out, and bring it into the restaurant. Feel free to forward this to your friends as well!

Pescado Mojado Coupon

Catering is offered at all locations... so for all those holiday parties coming up... catering your party is definitely an option.... PESCADO MOJADO will impress your guests, and relieve you from the stress of the preparation!! E-mail Bert Galvez at bertg1969@aol.com and tell him ELLE LIVING sent you!!

To good eating....

There's a "Latina on the Loose!"

The premise of Elle Living is definitely great food and culinary treasures, but in addition to all that delicious goodness, it's also a lifestyle site... your directory and resource for all things fabulous that allow for extraordinary living! By the way, don't worry that this is going to be a site for only the "well to do"; on the contrary, it's for everyone, not only the "Designer-Clad Set".... Simply those with a taste for good things and decadence! (Which, by the way, could come by way of the simplest things in life... sometimes, that can show up in a Taco Truck! LOL!) I'm at the beginning stages of launching the full site and so I have yet to incorporate the other arts, but I thought that it would be great to start with something that is definitely one of my favorites and probably close to many people's hearts... Theatre!!

First, I must say that if you could call something the "little production that could"... This would be it!! I love all things "live theatre" and when a dear friend of mine insisted that I go see this production being presented in Downtown LA, I was quite taken by her enthusiasm about this "one woman" production... So, of course, I had to go see for myself!

I was not quite sure what to expect, but I know that at the end, I was definitely glad that I made it out to see this production. "Latina on the Loose" is based on the life story of Mina Olivera, her life growing up as a Latina teenager, moving from country to country and all the silliness/happiness/craziness that happens in between such experiences... this would include her coming to America and realizing her dreams. Mina takes you on a true roller coaster ride (the really fun and exhilarating kind) of emotions... She was funny, witty, charming and captivating! You will laugh... (a lot)... you will cry (a little - :)) and feel every emotion in between happy and heartfelt!!

It is pretty amazing when one actress is able to take you through such an experience without a supporting cast... But Mina does exactly that, in a somewhat effortless way! The performance is very well written... in a way that captivates the audience from start to finish!

I was fortunate enough to see the final production on Sunday October 11 at the Los Angeles Theatre Company, but for those of you who weren’t able to see Mina in LA, don't worry... because against all odds... “the little production that could” is going on the road and being presented in various cities. Wherever you are, I highly recommend you go and experience this lovely, heartwarming tale of a very tenacious Latina! I must say, she makes me proud of my Latin Heritage! I got the feeling that her personality is truly contagious and fun and it came out all over the place in her production. I now know why my friend Stacey was adamant that I go see this work of love!

Here are some selected pics from the production:

And, here's a short clip from the show:

Mina: thank you for sharing yourself so generously with your audience and giving yourself so wholeheartedly to your work! I applaud you and support you (as a fellow Latina)... and can’t wait to see you on Broadway!

You can follow the show and Mina on Facebook on her fan page: Latina on The Loose

Or visit her website for dates and locations!

Abrazos y besos!!

A Truly Savory Experience in the South!

If you ever find yourself somewhere between the OC (Orange County, CA) and San Diego... Note to self... make it a point to stop over in a small town called Encinitas, CA... for the simple purpose of having a fantastic meal... but not just food... a dining experience... in a very unlikely location. Take a quaint bistro in a strip mall, throw in a very cheerful staff and a Paris trained chef... And VOILA... You have Savory Casual Fare! A delicious little bistro that calls itself casual. It’s adorable, really, but more importantly, in its simplicity, it is just delicious... in sight, sound and taste!

On a beautifully crisp and easy Sunday morning... on our way back to Orange County from a stay over in San Diego, our stopover in Encinitas turned out to be a new favorite way to spend a lazy weekend morning. Brunch at Savory is brunch unlike anything that you have ever experienced, no joke. I have never been a fan of huge buffets for two reasons: first, you overeat small portions of many selections, not really having the opportunity to savor just one or two things... and secondly, serving yourself, in my opinion, takes away from the dining experience and relishing in the company at your table because everyone is too busy going back and forth for more... exhausting, really!! But for all you brunch lovers... I have the perfect antidote... SAVORY!

A simple spread in the bar area is the beginning of your brunch experience. There were some mini croissants and mini puff pastries for the bread portion of the meal. There were the charcuteries (fresh cold cuts/cured meats), cheese plates, fresh fruits, baked fruits (this was a fruit bake), an assortment of green salads, pasta salads, and finally a freshly made egg-white frittata. Take a look at the pictures... The spread was simple, but perfect… simply lovely!!

I must make special mention about the croissants. On many an occasion, I have made a joke about how one can become a Croissant “snob” of sorts after having experienced the croissants in Paris! There is a je ne sais quoi about all Parisian pastries... especially the croissants! Just a quick aside about those Parisian croissants. They disintegrate upon touching your lips... a perfect fusion of butter and flour... unlike any other in existence... (ahh... my mouth is watering just getting present to all things Paris!)... Anyway... I must say what my lips have not uttered before... the croissants smelled and tasted peculiarly like those of Paris... only to find out that the chef at Savory is Paris-trained... and the croissants were freshly baked on the premises that morning... yes, just for brunch!! Wouldn’t you know it!! I would return just for those flaky, buttery croissants!

So that was the beginning of the meal!! You also have the opportunity to order a hot entrée... This is what made this brunch particularly special... you had the opportunity to sample the specialties from the kitchen, but they were made to order and served to you at your table by their warm and friendly servers! There were about eight entrees to choose from, not an easy choice... after much deliberation, our choices were finally a Goat Cheese and Granny Smith Apple quiche and a savory vegetarian crepe which was served with a tomato puree sauce on top.

The quiche was a masterpiece of flavors... perfect texture and flavor... flaky crust... simply delicious! The tartness of the green apples gave this entrée a brightness and splash of flavor! For all quiche lovers... a must try!

The crepe was just amazing... it was filled with kombucha squash, red cabbage, spinach and chanterelle mushrooms... it was topped with Swiss cheese and a tomato puree. I am a huge fan of crepes, all varieties, really... and though from time to time savory crepes are topped with a sauce of sorts, I must say that the tomato puree in this case, was totally unnecessary for my taste. It made the crepe seem like more of an Italian dish, and not being a big fan of thick sauces... I would have preferred the dish sans the sauce. On the other hand, I thought that maybe a cilantro or fresh herb/citrus infused sauce might have brightened up the dish more, it also might have brought out the flavors of the delicious fresh vegetables in the crepe. All in all, the choice of fresh grilled veggies was perfect. I would; however, order it next time with the sauce on the side or no sauce at all.

I highly recommend this perfect little bistro (despite the tomato sauce!)... just a hiccup, really! The quality of the food is amazing and the value ($23.00 p/p for brunch) is deliciously easy on the wallet!

I highly encourage all my OC friends to go for that relaxing drive on Sunday morning and stop over in Encinitas for this fantastic brunch... it's truly a treat! I can’t wait to return and try their dinner menu, which I have heard is wonderful. We were also told by our awesome and adorable server Bobby that they serve a proper tea service complete with sandwiches, scones, the works... all freshly made for you (requires advanced reservations with the restaurant!).

A bite of Italy at the Marina!!!

Had I known that there were a hidden piece of Italy in SoCal, I would have made it a point to drive there sooner!!

Tucked away in the heart of Marina del Rey at the Villa Marina Marketplace on Maxella, there is a small place called Antica Pizzeria that is all about great Italian!! Very cute, eclectic eatery... looks like something straight from the “Boot”. The food is Neapolitan Cuisine, and though I have yet to visit Naples, every bite was so authentic (at least to the Italy that I know) and it took me back to the Italy that I was fortunate enough to experience... Delicious and savory!!

First, we ordered a glass of an amazing red wine from Montepulciano, Tuscany! It took me right back to a lovely osteria in Arezzo that I had dinner in...(sigh!)...
It was a flavorful full-bodied wine through and through, made with the Sangiovese grape. Antica offers a modest wine list, but because they have great varieties from Italy... go with the Italian... you can get the Merlot anytime!

For starters, two pièces de résistance. First, there was the Arancino di Riso, very similar to the Roman Suppli, which in essence is a savory risotto ball that is mixed with cheese or a variety of flavorings and flash fried to create a fantastic and decadent treat, the one that we had that night was filled with mushrooms and peas... so good!! Probably not the healthiest choice... but certainly worth the splurge! This variety offered at Antica was the family size, easily shareable with four people (it is supposed to be an appetizer, after all!). It was served on a light tomato sauce... sure to be a crowd pleaser!!

Second, there was the Timballetto di Maccheroni!! On paper it was probably not the first thing you would want to try... but when in Antica... ordering this is a must!! It's a puff pastry filled with spaghetti, sausage meat, peas and cheese! I know, it doesn’t sound that great... but trust me... you won’t be sorry!! DELISH!! This too, can be shared with at least four people... Small portions, people!! ☺

So many great pizzas... What to choose???

We went with two pizzas, both bianca... which in essence are, pizzas minus the traditional tomato sauce. The first was Pizza Bianca al Prosciutto... this was served with buffalo mozzarella cheese, fresh arugula and fresh prosciutto! I was transported back to Italy and did not want to return! Your taste buds will will dance with this one... drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil on it for a fresh, crisp bite... So good! You’ll want to call me and thank me! ☺

The second pizza was Pizza al Cafone; which had italian sausage and broccoli rabe! I know it sounds strange to have broccoli on pizza... Live a little... walk on the wild side a bit... your taste buds will thank you!! Very much worth the try... and for you parents out there, great way to get the kiddies to eat their veggies!! ☺

I think our eyes were bigger than our stomachs because we ordered two appetizers and two pizzas, and for two people this is a lot of food! If you don't mind taking the leftovers home... order two pizzas so that you can sample the varieties!! You won’t be sorry!

All in all... Eating at Antica Pizzeria is a great experience! The staff is lovely and very attentive. The prices are easy on the wallet, and there was no compromise on quality, ambiance or flavor! Truly authentic, right down to the deli cases in the front of the restaurant, it just feels like Italy... And the taste... makes me want to jump on a plane to go right back!

Visit them at www.anticapizzeria.net... (make it a date night… there is a movie theater right next door and the marina is a stone’s throw away!)

Buon Appetito!!

Another Easy and Healthy Meal

For those of you who have requested more recipes... I am taking into consideration a few prime factors... It’s summer... many of us crave fresh ingredients... we want quick meals that won’t require being over a hot stove for a long time... healthy, in an effort to stay on track with our fitness routines... and by all means delicious... because, really? What is the point of eating something if it doesn’t taste good, right?

So staying on the same page with a recipe that I recently posted for a healthy breakfast wrap; this is the dinner version of that! It is great for all you vegetarians out there... but for those of you who want something a bit heartier you can certainly add some grilled or roasted chicken as well! Personally, I love this for its nutritious value and has been a crowd pleaser each time I have served it up for friends.

Ingredients:

1 serving of canned Trader Joe’s Organic Pinto beans (A can is about 2 1/2 servings)
1 Sprouted wheat tortilla (I prefer Food for Life – Ezequiel 4:9 brand)
1 tbsp. of cheese (any kind you have handy)
1/2 an avocado
5 slices of tomato
1 handful of mixed greens or baby spinach
A Hot Sauce
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Heat the beans in a medium sauce pan for about 5 mins (I dispose of 1/2 the water so that they are not too watery); mashing with a potato masher... until they come to a boil. (Mashing the beans really gives the illusion they are refried… but because we are not frying them... they are still healthy!).

Warm the tortilla, about 30 seconds on each side... be careful, as overheating may cause the tortilla to get dry and tough. Line the middle with cheese (I love goat cheese because it gives the dish a “bite” of sorts, but any shredded white cheese works). Spoon the beans over the cheese so that the heat from the beans causes the cheese to melt. Season with hot sauce, to taste. Line the tomatoes and avocado wedges alongside the beans; season with salt and pepper. Top with the greens and sprinkle with a good serving of extra virgin olive oil and then sprinkle again with some fresh pepper. Fold over and cut in half.

Serves 1

Of course, you can throw in other favorites if you wish. Sometimes I mix black beans with the pinto and that makes for a delicious fusion!! Another note... I choose to use canned beans, as I don’t normally cook a family portion pot of beans because they spoil quickly. I have found that using canned organic beans, is the next best thing to homemade; however, if you have the homemade beans, more power to you!

Remember... there are no rules here... the thing to keep in mind is fresh ingredients and keeping everything healthy!

This wrap is a great alternative to fast food! Ironically it is fast, meaning it does not take long in the kitchen at all, and you can prepare it in minutes. It is healthy and costs a lot less per serving, whether you are cooking for just yourself or the entire family! Even though I said this is the dinner version of the healthy breakfast wrap, it is actually great for both lunch or dinner... and most importantly... it is flavorful and very satisfying!!

I am a true stand for your well-being and I salute you all for choosing the healthier alternatives!

Bon appetit, my friends!

A Month's Wait for Pizza???

So who would have thought… that a pizzeria on the Westside would require making reservations one month in advance?? Whatever happened to just walking in to a great pizza place? Well, of course those places are still around for “ordinary” pizza… but if you are one with a more discriminating palate, then you had better get on that phone and make plans for next month! Ladies and gentlemen… May I present to you Pizzeria Mozza (641 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles, CA)?! A pizzeria like you have never encountered before!! (I promise!) … Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich come together with their prodigious talents and culinary wherewithal to bring you this quaint establishment on the corner of Melrose and Highland (its sister restaurant Osteria Mozza right next door on the Melrose side).

Quite the buzzing place this is… busy with a melting pot of foodies waiting to take that first bite… and let me tell you… waiting a month is so worth it!

Allow me to first make mention that they have quite the wine list… all wines from Italy. So for those of you who are not quite familiar with Italian varieties, your best bet is to try the wines by the glass, and ask the bartender for suggestions. I happened to be accompanied by the expert of all things Italian, so I didn’t have to worry about what to order…I just drank the selection handed to me! Lucky girl that I am!

For starters we went with a glass of Reggiano Lambrusco - a light red wine that opens up ones appetite… so clearly best as an aperitif. We later enjoyed Quattro Mani's take on Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico Rubrato… Both wonderful wines and complementary to our fantastic meal.

The chef sent out a complimentary appetizer, if you will. It’s called Arancini di Riso, which in essence is a ball of rice mixed with cheese and fried… accompanied by a Marinara dipping sauce… delicious! What a great start to what would turn out to be quite the remarkable meal!

For an additional appetizer we chose the FRIED SQUASH FLOWER (one of Christine’s favorites and her request!). Though this may sound a bit unusual to some, this is quite the culinary delicacy. Clearly an edible flower, the chef stuffs this delicate veggie with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, seasons it with warm spices including nutmeg, then rolls it in rice flour and finally flash fries it! That is a bite of WOW! But be careful it is served scorching hot (BTW, how I love my food)… but don’t bite into it too quickly, I actually burned my tongue! (Don't worry... I got over the pain quite quickly! LOL) … A definite “must try”! (Good call, Chris!)

So I realize that we were at a pizzeria… and “when in Rome, you do as the Romans”… so the thing to do would be to order pizza, right? Well, I didn’t seem to think so! My senses drifted when I became aware of one of the night’s specials LAMB STRACOTTO. This is basically a slow-cooked lamb… literally! It is cooked all day and results in an extremely tender meat that melts off the bone! I am a huge fan of lamb, and given the prodigies in the kitchen who created this, I had to try it! (Of course, I figured I could try what everybody else was having! LOL) I was very pleased with my choice and a definite “must try” for those of you lamb lovers!! It was served on a bed of polenta…and can I just say? YUM!

Everyone else was pretty set on ordering the food du jour, PIZZA! So here are the table choices:

Mark (@buenospot): Speck (which is a ham similar to Prosciutto), Buffala Mozzarella, olive tapenade and oregano. This pizza is truly “to die for”! The flavors of the toppings fuse to create an unbelievable mouthful! And the crust, lest I forget, light, airy and flaky (the only “GOOD” kind of “FLAKY”! LOL)

Christine: OK… this may sound like the most absurd choice in toppings (because that is what I thought when she ordered it! LOL) … all I can say: OMG!!! Fried egg, bacon, Yukon Gold potatoes and Bermuda onions graced the top of this creation! Absolutely delicious!! Sounds like breakfast… but quite frankly could be the perfect meal at anytime of the day! Made for an excellent dinner!

From Pizzeria Mozza

Jonathan: Pizza Alla Benno was Mr. Logan’s choice! (and a great choice at that!) … this was Hawaiian pizza on steroids! Speck, pineapple, jalapenos, mozzarella and tomato topped this masterpiece! Actually… if there is such a thing as Hawaiian pizza in heaven; this is exactly how it’d be prepared! LOL! (Yes! It was that good!) …Sadly, I think we were all so preoccupied having “a Party” in our mouths… that we forgot to take a picture of Jonathan’s pizza! Shucks! I think we will have to go back to reorder it and post the picture! LOL

You would think that we were too full to order dessert after everything I just described?

Not this bunch!

We couldn’t resist the options so we decided to order two different desserts and share. I have never been the biggest fan of custard desserts, though I do have a weakness for the occasional well prepared Crème Brulee, I don’t normally opt for that type of dessert. Mark, being familiar with all things authentically Italian, as he has spent quite a bit of time in that country, insisted that we try the Panna cotta. This is in fact Italy’s version of a crème brulee, if you will. It was served with homemade almond clusters on the side and topped with fresh berries! Words cannot describe the amazing flavors in this concoction! It was truly decadent and worth every bite! I could only hope they have that available the next time I visit!

The second dessert was an assortment of the fresh gelatos they make here. A scoop of Espresso, one of Hazelnut and the other, an Italian favorite, Stracciatella. Garnished with a fresh waffle cone… for you gelato lovers… absolutely delicious… a staple dessert!

The evening was quite the charming one… amazing food, wonderful company and ever-interesting conversation! Four great friends; four true foodies at a pizzeria… but a pizzeria like no other! If at any given point you thought that CPK was as “gourmet” a pizza as you ever needed to try… that’s ok for a quick “mall” lunch… but the true gourmet pizza is on the corner of Highland and Melrose and you may have to wait a month to sink your teeth into it… but you’ll quickly get over the wait when you experience this genius food! As a matter of fact, I’d suggest you start dialing for that reservation!

Buon Appetito!!

Quick and Nutritious Breakfast

Breakfast in 10! Quick, Healthy and Delicious!

So… for all of you out there requesting healthy recipes…. I am sharing one of my favorite “throw together” recipes for breakfast!! This is great for breakfast, brunch… or just anytime that you feel like something with a bit of protein and healthy grains!

I love the fusion of flavors here… a very California dish, if you will. This is the equivalent of a great breakfast wrap… and a much healthier alternative to a burrito.

Here are the ingredients you need:

2 Eggs (you can substitute 3 egg whites for a low-fat version)
1 Sprouted Wheat Tortilla (Food for Life – EZEQUIEL 4:9 brand is preferred)
2 tbsp. of Trader Joe’s Habanero Lime Salsa
1/2 of a fresh avocado (or 1 small avocado)
5 slices of Roma Tomato
1 tbsp. Grapeseed Oil
Sea Salt
Fresh Pepper

Directions

In a small skillet heat the oil (medium heat) and drop in the eggs or egg whites and scramble… cook for about 2 minutes and stir in the salsa.

Warm the tortilla lightly (I say this because Sprouted Wheat tortillas will burn quickly and if over heated they have the tendency of becoming dry and dense). Place the tortilla on a plate and neatly line up the avocado (sliced) and the tomato…light salt and pepper to taste. Add the cooked eggs and additional salsa if desired.

Fold over and cut in half.

Serves 1

SIDE NOTES

SPROUTED WHEAT: Using a sprouted wheat tortilla is the healthiest alternative to any other “tortilla” or “wrap”. The sprouted wheat is a live food, thereby, giving you the true benefit of a wheat germ. It is a “good” carb, if you will… great brain food!! It is also great for digestion and very satisfying! (I will talk about the benefits of Sprouted Wheat products on a future post… stay tuned!)

SALSA: The salsa can be replaced by any salsa you may have on hand. This TJ’s variety is simply very flavorful and nothing like the store bought varietes out there! (Sorry, but Pace Picante is not really salsa… and just the same as the New York City counterparts… that’s all marketing!) LOL … If you have homemade salsa… more power to you! I use homemade when I have it on hand (BTW, I will soon post a homemade Garden Salsa recipe for your enjoyment!)

GRAPESEED OIL: This is one of the few oils that is the healthiest to cook with, as it keeps its nutritional value even in heat. (of this… I will also share a separate post about the oils we have in our pantries, the difference in nutritional value and taste… stay tuned!)

So on a closing note… enjoy your breakfast wrap… this has become one of my quick, “on the go” breakfasts, and a favorite amongst friends!

I toast to your health! Enjoy!

Tis the Seasoning...

Seasoning food is a very important part of a recipe; it can make or break the dish! Growing up in a Mexican household, I learned early on that the seasoning you use to flavor a dish is as important as the main ingredients, and now as a grown up and a full-fledged foodie, I couldn’t be more certain of this. Something as simple as too little salt can take away the WOW factor of a recipe, but on the flip side, over salting a dish, will kill it altogether.

Nevertheless, thank goodness we have some pretty fantastic chefs in our culture that we can turn to for ideas on flavoring our food. In this case, I will take Emeril Lagasse and his savoir-faire for all things Cajun. Coming from the South, our friend uses all the right spices to give his creations a kick of flavor… this, my friends, is why he canned the exclamation, “BAM!” when he cooks! It’s inevitable when using all the seasonings that he uses to shout that in the kitchen!

I must admit, I am an avid fan of all shows on Food Network, and I watch as often as time permits (often using TiVo to record some of these geniuses in the kitchen). For those of you who are familiar with his culinary techniques, Emeril uses a mix of spices he calls “Essence” as a key ingredient for many recipes. I have used this mix time and time again to season everything from stir-fried veggies and salads to seasoning chicken and fish. This mix also lends itself as a great rub to marinate meats or seafood, my favorite being shrimp… I put my raw shrimp in a large sealable plastic bag, shake in the Essence, rubbing it into the shrimp and refrigerate at least an hour prior to cooking. Served alongside brown rice and veggies or accompanying a simple pasta… simply delish!

As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, I am posting the recipe, if you will, for this mixture. This gives you a good amount of seasoning mix to be able to use as a rub with a shrimp dish like the one I mentioned, or simply to share with a friend in pretty jar as a hostess gift!! (You didn’t think of that, did you?) This makes for a very thoughtful gift, and adds a personal touch to show your appreciation for the host/hostess of any occasion.

Essence of Emeril

On Today's Menu: A simple and healthy lunchtime salad

For many of you who are my friends on Facebook, you are all too familiar with my sharing of what I am enjoying for lunch or dinner. I have received quite a few requests to post some recipes on what I eat; but the reality is there really are no recipes to my quirky salads... I just use whatever I have to mix in that day.

I will also throw in the fact that summer is right around the corner, and I am on a mission to get back into swimsuit shape! I am a true foodie at heart, but I am also a bit of a health nut; and that shows up in the meals I prepare at home on a daily basis (or at the office)!

Lunch doesn’t have to be complicated; but it should be food that is going to not only be nutritious, it is also going to give you natural energy and be “waist” friendly!! So here is my take on what would be an “every day” salad for me!

I keep a crystal salad bowl and silverware in my office for a couple of reasons. One, I don’t like to eat on paper/plastic anything (not as appetizing to me)... nor is it very “green”, and two, it is much easier to “toss” a salad in a bowl, as opposed to a paper plate!! Tossing in crystal bowl = easy; paper plate...not so much!

Ingredients:
A handful of salad greens (about 3 cups)
(you could use any mix… I prefer the Trader Joe’s Organic mixes).

2-4 pieces of fresh diced fruit (i.e. peaches, apricots, strawberries, avocado, bananas, mango)

2-3 tablespoons of raw nuts (walnuts, pecans, pistachios or pine nuts)

1-2 Tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive oil

(salt and pepper to taste... Or seasoning salt)

Directions:
Place the greens in your salad bowl. Top the greens with the diced fruit of choice (as mentioned above, today I am tossing avocado, white peaches, a few strawberries and two tropical “baby” bananas). Lightly season the fruit, toss in the nuts, drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil and voila... the 5 minute lunch!

In this economy it makes more sense to take a little time to shop ahead for your weekday lunches. You will spend pennies on the dollar by preparing your own salad when compared to going to a deli/restaurant to buy a pre-made version. Also, keep in mind that the quality of the pre-made salad will not be as good as one that you prepare yourself!

On a health note: Using olive oil in lieu of a dressing eliminates preservatives and sugars that are not good for your health or your weight. Olive oil is also great for controlling your cholesterol. Flax seed oil is also a great alternative as it supplies you with much needed Omegas, and aids in proper digestion of good fat in your body and helps to eliminate “bad” fat.

Raw nuts are healthier (believe it or not) than the roasted and/or salted variety, they supply you with protein and Omegas. Check out this link so that you can read more about the added benefit of raw nuts... and you thought the nuts were just to add crunch to your salad??

On a flavor note: I use “Essence of Emeril” for my seasoning. It is a cajun mixture that is a creation of the mastermind chef Emeril Lagasse. It is available to purchase at most grocery stores, but you can make the freshest and most natural alternative, by making it from scratch. (I will post the recipe on a separate blog entry).
Using “Essence” gives any salad a spicier kick and lots of flavor!

So consider that the salad idea I just gave you is not only supplying your body with a great array of much needed vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and cancer fighting radicals, but it is low in fat, low in calories (a great friend to our waists!), friendly to your wallet... And my favorite part... it’s DELICIOUS!!

Bon appetite mes amies!! :)

Transforming Our Thoughts on Food...

Subject: Organic foods for our schools through Sustainable Gardens…

On May 19, 2009, I attended an amazing event that took place at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, CA, with my like minded, (project manager, if you will), Mark. The honest truth is I really didn’t know what I was about to experience. But really? …Whenever Mark gets an idea to do something, it is normally on cue with a past conversation we’ve had… or a thought I’ve shared with him… or simply something that has bounced off the constant turning of wheels in this rather quirky mind of mine.

As many of you know, I have an inherent passion for food and all things focused on health. Many of you may also know that I plan on attending culinary school in 2010, in an effort to follow my passion for all things culinary and a true desire to reinvent myself in that field.

In some previous conversations Mark and I have shared, normally over something fabulous to eat, I had touched on a growing desire I have in my heart to somehow influence the new generations in how they eat, how they perceive food, and the relevance it all has to life, culture, the art of cuisine and more importantly, their health. You’ve got to love that there are those people in your life who really listen and are a true stand for your greatness, and how that greatness can serve and contribute to the lives of others. Well, in that space, Mark purchased tickets for us to attend a lecture with Alice Waters, a renowned chef, writer and activist, if you will. This was a fundraiser for a local school, Canyon Elementary, who is raising money and awareness on this idea of having a schoolyard garden. In this lecture Ms. Waters would be speaking about her journey in the Edible Schoolyard project she pioneered in Berkeley, California, where she is the chef/owner of the very renowned restaurant, CHEZ PANISSE.

Well, as I said earlier, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I came with an open mind and in my heart, there was a tinge of a feeling that there was a purpose in my being there. Can I just say? I was blown away! Alice Waters took the stage with Sam Levin, the most remarkable 15 year old I have ever heard speak! Sam is a high school student from Massachusetts, who was inspired by the same vision Ms. Waters had for her Northern California town, clear across the country! In just 18 months, Sam, enrolled not only other students and his school administration, but an entire community to step into growing a garden where the students planted, sowed and harvested organic fruits and vegetables, that were then taken, cooked and served in the local school cafeterias. This not only made the children and the community a part of the process, but is single handedly transforming how these children eat and is making them aware of not only the many arrays of flavors and amazing varieties of foods available to them that are actually good for them, but also how it is relevant in the different subjects they study; math, history, science, and so on. It is in essence reeducating them about nutrition and both the good and bad effects feeding our bodies with the wrong foods will have, both short and long term. This is especially important in a culture where fast food and processed food is a normal way of life.

Sam spoke with an intense passion about this idea of having schoolyard gardens not only in his town, but around the nation and globally. He interacted with Alice in such a gracefully powerful way, that it literally moved the entire audience. As I sit here and write about this, I can’t help but get present to how moved I was as I sat there in that audience in awe and witnessed the birth of a future leader.

I applaud both Sam and Alice for their efforts in bringing this vision, not only locally, but statewide throughout California, and nationwide to the attention of our lawmakers in Washington D.C. The idea of transforming an entire generation’s thought process on food, and the re-education of the generations before them about the relevance and importance of what we put into our bodies. This vision alone can prevent future diseases and health problems that can range from heart disease and diabetes to malnutrition and obesity; problems that have affected our nation, our world, as a whole. I am truly moved, touched and inspired!

Stay tuned, as I am sure that this conversation will continue in my blog. I have yet to read the story behind this movement, written by Ms. Waters; a wonderful little book called “EDIBLE SCHOOLYARD; A Universal Idea”, which she cheerfully signed for me that evening!

Yes, I am all about eating all things decadent, but as most of us know, everything in moderation is key! Our health is something we all need to be striving to make better one day at a time. I am truly grateful for people like Alice Waters and Sam Levin; people like these two extraordinary individuals can inspire the world, one community at a time, to step up to the possibility of making a difference for our children to live healthier and fuller lives!

Thank you, Mark… for listening to my crazy thoughts and ideas in transforming the world through food! Your listening will one day be a huge contribution to others!

Breakfast on the Road...

Location: Linn's Bakery and Cafe, Cambria, CA

So who said breakfast fare had to be boring??? Perhaps many of us have become cynical about the idea of a fantastic breakfast, being surrounded by so many chain restaurants offering $4 dollar deals and serving what seems to be yesterday’s pancakes! ... Or simply being too busy to stop, sit and entertain eating in the morning...really? We don’t even stop for coffee anymore! Why? There’s drive-thru Starbuck’s! LOL :)

Well... stopping and enjoying (and smelling the roses, or in this case, the scones!)seems to be the thing to do in the magical little town of Cambria, California! Taking a brisk morning walk on a beautiful spring morning... my friend and I made our way through town along the main road. I honestly don’t think I have seen so many “Mom and Pop” establishments, let alone cafes!! There were at least a dozen, if not more, that we passed by, but by impulse chose to stop and enter Linn’s Bakery. I honestly was enrolled by the tall, yet charming building...having a "thing" for aesthetics... it seemed natural to go into this place without any point of reference about what kind of eatery this was. I was very quickly taken in by the fantastic and intoxicating fragrance of freshly baked goods and the wonderful surroundings, so we chose a corner table to "sit" and have breakfast.

You immediately get wind of what this warm place is about, it’s all about family; the Linn Family. The friendly server immediately brought a menu to us, only to confirm the history of the place; it is a family owned gourmet empire! What started small has become the original Linn’s, along with a sister cafe "Easy as Pie", in Cambria, as well. If that weren’t enough, a gourmet bakery, gift shop and online store!

Turns out they are famous for their Ollalieberry baked goods! (and jams!) ... I was sold! There is nothing in the world that I love more than an amazing baked good with a tart berry! The ollalieberry is a hybrid berry, if you will. This berry came to be through the fusion of a raspberry and a blackberry... and what a genius marriage that was! Tart and just the right amount of sweet, this berry leaves you much to talk about!

Of course, I couldn’t resist this whole berry theme, so I ordered a freshly baked Ollalieberry scone, which apparently is one of the best-sellers! "Hello, lover!"... was my first thought! :) ... is it necessary to embellish on that thought, really? LOL
The funny part is that they take a perfectly baked plain buttermilk scone and top it with their gourmet pie filling/topping! I am not the biggest fan of plain scones... but aside from the fact that this scone could stand on its own two feet (well, that is if it had feet, of course!)… :) ... but the amazing creation of ollalieberry dessert topping just made it perfection at every bite! I am still quite shocked I didn’t just order 1/2 a dozen scones for breakfast and called it a day! :)

OK... I do recall why I didn’t have just a scone (or 3 or 4) for breakfast, the fare they offered was to fantastic too pass up! So I ordered the Crab Vegetable omelette ... and my friend ordered the Eggs Benedict w/ homemade sausage.

This omelette is a must try... fresh Northern Cali crab fused with seasonings/veggies and a fantastic cream sauce... and it was accompanied by a side of very fresh hash brown potatoes and freshly cut fruit! I, of course, had to have a side of avocado with my order... there is nothing like the freshness of an avocado to lighten up breakfast fare!! A smile at every bite!!

Being a huge fan of Eggs Benedict for the better part of his life, my friend raved about Linn’s version of Benedict (Coming from a true foodie... this would be a very good thing!) They came served up on an English muffin, of course, with the amazing hash browns ... and looked amazing! I can’t say I tasted them, as I had quite a bit to indulge in myself, however, a bite of the sausage was a burst of flavor.... And distinctly obvious it was freshly made.

Great OJ... and Java to wash down a pretty spectacular start to a fantastic California morning! Of course, we ventured to the rear of the restaurant where an old road leads you to the gourmet shop... I just had to take home a jar of the Ollalieberry Preserves... they are THAT good! Of course... you can order the goods online at www.linnsfruitbin.com. The selection available online is mouth watering and would make some pretty fantastic gifts… especially around the holidays!

I highly recommend this wonderful café... for all of you passing thru Cambria... I know for sure I will return in the very near future!! I’m already tasting that Ollalieberry scone in my mouth...YUM!

2 "Throwdown" Chefs on 5 de Mayo = Muy Delicioso!

Location: La Casita Mexicana, Bell, CA

I believe I have mentioned before that I stop at nothing, to find the best food, in the most unlikely places. Living in Los Angeles, it’s a given that if you want a taste of the extraordinary, you venture West... West LA, that is! I must admit that some of my favorite eateries are on that side of town... but you’ve got to love finding authenticity on a plate, in an unlikely side of town... and wouldn’t you know it?? I have done it again!!

La Casita Mexicana is located in Bell; a small community located about 15 minutes from Downtown LA. Predominantly a Hispanic community, Bell is the home of many small "Mom and Pop" restaurants, many Mexican food, others from a variety of Latin American countries... there is quite a bit to choose from. But seldom do you come across a jewel of an eatery, which boasts, not only truly authentic Mexican cuisine, but Mexican gone gourmet!! Chefs Jaime Martin Del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu, are the geniuses behind this operation.

Jaime and Ramiro have gained quite a bit of notoriety since they appeared on Food Network’s "THROWDOWN with Bobby Flay", where Bobby Flay challenged them to a cook-off with his take on a gourmet Chile Relleno, since this Mexican duo have become famous for their amazing chiles rellenos, my favorite being "Chile en Nogada." They made their "vegetarian" version (which includes nopales (cactus) amongst the key ingredients) for the THROWDOWN... but regardless, their chiles rellenos are so good, that even Mr. Flay didn’t manage to outdo them!!

I visited this quaint café on Cinco de Mayo, as it only seemed fitting to eat Mexican on that day, right? (I guess this was just my excuse... most use this day as an excuse to have one tequila too many... this was my excuse to indulge... and so I did!) LOL :) ... On this particular day, the chefs decided to serve some Botanas Mexicanas which equate to the South of the Border’s answer to small portions of typical fare, like tapas, if you will. The choices today were Sopes, Tacos de Papa (Potato tacos) and Pozole. It seemed as though I had been transported to Jalisco in the blink of an eye!

For starters the soup of the day was Caldo de Arroz Mexicano. This was a cream based soup with Mexican Fried Rice as the star ingredient... (I know you are tasting it right now!) ... It was very good... A warm, comforting feeling in your tummy, actually! The kind of soup you would want to enjoy on a cold rainy day!! Delish!

My friend chose to have the Sopes, as an homage to the occasion. I, of course, had to order the Chile en Nogada!! Call me a creature of habit, if you must, but this is one of those things that I would not make at home, and "when in Rome..." Or should I say "...when in Bell..." LOL

Botanas Mexicanas (Plate of Sopes) ... 5 de Mayo Special of the day!
From LaCasitaMexicana

The sopes were simple and flavorful. These Mexican treats sit on a corn base... almost like a thick tortilla (made of masa) and pan fried to cook and create a crunchy exterior. They offered the chicken or pork version so we chose two chicken and one pork. They were served as sopes are traditionally, garnished with lettuce, tomato and queso fresco (a cheese with the consistency of crumbled feta). I have had many versions of this dish throughout my life, but these were true to their Mexican origin, simple and flavorful!

Chile en Nogada... (I order this everytime!!)
From LaCasitaMexicana

Then there was my chile relleno!! This is no Chile relleno for the fainthearted... nor the ones that are used to the more common plain cheese version... nothing wrong with those, but they definitely do not compare to these!! This recipe is not typically found in just any restaurant. The chefs delicately stuff this green chile with a ground beef mixture that is fused with raisins and chopped nuts, and seasoned with spices to give this mixture a very warm feel. They then cover the top of the chile with a nut cream sauce and it is garnished with fresh pomegranate seeds! I must add, that the pomegranate seeds make this dish aesthetically delightful; however, the tartness with the warmth of the sauce and meat mixture combined with the spiciness of the chile, is a flavor unlike any other! A true treat and a sheer delight at every bite! A must try for all you foodies out there!

The chefs, being true to their Mexican roots, were so hospitable and truly gracious hosts. I almost felt as though I had been at my mother’s home, where food abounds and the sight of an empty plate is not possible because there is always more where that came from! So wouldn’t you know it... some Potato tacos showed up at our table, followed by Chicken Pozole!

I must admit that I was leery about the potato tacos at first... not because the presentation wasn’t picture perfect, but having grown up in a very traditional Mexican family, my mother made some truly fantastic potato tacos, a recipe that has become famous amongst family and friends and that are often referred to as "killer"! I took the first bite... and really took in the true essence of Mexico, and the origin of a potato taco. This delicacy, if you will, is one of the simplest of Mexican foods you may ever encounter, but when done right... simple, fused with the right seasonings and textures... you have a winner! Not greasy at all... A true delight at every bite... Could totally give mom a run for her money! LOL

Tacos de papa (Potato Tacos)... Simple, but delicious!
From LaCasitaMexicana

Then came the pozole! Traditionally this is made with pork, but in true California spirit, Ramiro and Jaime prepared the healthier alternative, Chicken Pozole. Can I just say, "YUM!" Of course, this came accompanied by the typical garnishes; shredded cabbage, onion, sliced radishes and lime! This was truly Mexican authenticity at its best! The broth had a red chile base... it wasn’t too spicy... but the flavor was perfectly fused! There is a reason why this has become the remedy for a hangover... the spice and the flavor can revive the human spirit like nothing else!

From LaCasitaMexicana

I must admit... I was ready to pop at this point! That was quite a bit of food we had the true pleasure of enjoying... the problem is that it is so amazing you just don’t want to put your fork (or spoon) down! So alas... we were winding down to the end of a very hearty and fantastic dinner. But how do you go to LA CASITA and not have the Guavas en Rompope for dessert? LOL

Yes! We still ordered dessert!! How does that happen that there is always room for a bit of something sweet!?!?

Guavas en Rompope
From LaCasitaMexicana

I have always been a huge fan of all things tropical, especially fruits! Guavas are a huge part of the Mexican culture... I enjoyed them growing up... and I still do! But you have got to love the "adult" version of a guava... that would be how Jaime and Ramiro serve them up! Rompope is a rum-based Mexican liqueur, with an eggnog flavor, if you will. These genius chefs take this liqueur and create a sauce, with what seems to be a simple syrup and serve the fruit straight up dressed in this sauce. A wonderful indulgence in every bite!! (I have to admit... I order these every time!!) A must try when you come visit the chefs that make our South of the Border neighbors very proud!

I invite you all to come visit this quaint establishment! If you are always on the lookout for a great eatery... you needn’t go any farther to find this fantastic fare!
The fun part is getting to meet these two very charming and fabulous chefs... not only do they serve up a true Mexican Culinary experience, they epitomize the beautiful spirit of this amazing country... and truly represent what Mexican Gastronomy should be!

The 2 fabulous chefs, Ramiro and Jaime
...and the future Food Network Star, Elle!! :) (One can only dream!)
From LaCasitaMexicana

Take a look at their website www.casitamex.com, you will meet the chefs (online for now)... and see how they have taken Mexican cuisine to a level that makes me proud of my Mexican heritage! Be sure to tell them that Elvia sent you when you go visit!! ... and as we would say in Spanish, Buen provecho!

A California treat for all the senses!

Location:
The Black Cat
(An American Bistro and Wine Bar), Cambria, CA

Cambria, California. What does one say about this quaint little town tucked away along the coastline of this beautiful state? Nestled at the crossroads where Highways 1 and 46 meet, and just a 3 ½ hour drive from Los Angeles, this little town is the antidote for the busy city life and everyday concerns. A great place to spend a quiet and lazy weekend and enjoy wine tasting at nearby Paso Robles wineries or the perfect stopover on the way to a Northern California destination.

Along the main street you will come across what is perhaps the cutest restaurant in this adorable town...in what seems to have been an old craftsman style home...this bistro is the perfect place to end a long afternoon drive up the coast... There is a story behind this fantastic eatery, and it is shared on their friendly website which I highly encourage you to visit. Their menu philosophy is simple: "To please their guests with imaginative fare, while using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients."

From cambria

I must say to start, that the staff is amazing, they held our reservation, despite the fact that we were running quite late; did I mention the Friday traffic in Southern California… need I say more?? LOL. Having said that, I was a tad car sick when we arrived and asked for a huge favor; I asked our server if she’d be so kind to bring me some hot water with a couple bite size pieces of fresh ginger, in order for me to settle my stomach. Though this was clearly not on the menu, she very cheerfully obliged and within a few short minutes returned with relief... And sure enough... worked like magic...in a matter of minutes! I so appreciate that kind of amazing service!! (and we had not even ordered yet!) :)

We started with a very much needed beverage, I went with the Kir Royale, as this champagne based beverage mixed with framboise (liqueur) makes me nostalgic for my time in Paris and this drink is not something commonly found on a bar menu anywhere. As expected, simply delicious and a perfect start to a rather fantastic evening. The only difference with this Kir was that it was made with Prosecco, which is Italy’s version of champagne; it still resulted in a refreshing, crisp and light drink. My friend chose a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, this one from Cedar Lane Vineyards. I must say I was rather impressed by this white wine...typically Sauvignon Blancs are pretty dry, but this one had some bright and crisp citrus notes, a very pleasant surprise that begged for a second glass!! I will have to make sure to pick up a bottle of this Sauvignon Blanc when I find it!

From cambria

It was a bit late for dinner, so instead of having a full meal, we decided to go with two appetizers and then shared one entree...what a great idea that turned out to be! (That meant we could try several things!)
To start, we ordered the Gorgonzola stuffed green olives...presented on a cute white plate, these olives are flash fried in order to melt the cheese. Simple but delicious...a no fuss appetizer that wakes up your palette with warm comfort!

From cambria

The second appetizer was the one that almost got away...but I insisted...it sounded too decadent to pass up! Mushroom and Sage Gnocchi; made with Shitake, cremini and oyster mushrooms. It was served with shredded radicchio with a martini cream and asiago cheese. For those of you not familiar with this Italian comfort food; it is a pasta, of sorts, made with potatoes and flour; the result is what seems to be small pillows of potato that are sheer bliss! The texture of the gnocchi was perfect! (I have attempted to make it from scratch, to no avail! It was a bit mushy when I tried...so this is something I need to perfect in the future. If only the result could be like the ones served here! Every bite put a smile on your face...a party in your mouth, if you will!

From cambria

This was followed by a truly flavorful Arugula salad! Not being a stranger to some amazing salads...this one was a creation to be proud of; perfect flavors fused together with Crispy Pancetta, Goat cheese, chopped apple bits and the happy surprise: Roasted Peanuts! (Who knew?) ... I have always enjoyed nuts in my salads...but very typically pecans, walnuts and pine nuts is what you will encounter. The roasted peanuts added a warmth to the salad, along with the pancetta and goat cheese. (My mouth is watering as I recollect the flavors! Yum!) :)

For the entree we went with the Wild California Halibut, quite fitting, since we were embarking on a long weekend road trip of sorts, in this very beautiful state I call home! The dish was simple, but delectable. What made it different was the specific presentation. Served with a Kalamata and bread tapenade in a roasted fennel broth with shaved fennel and orange and accompanied by butter braised fingerling potatoes and haricots verts (the French version of green beans). Do I really need to embellish more on this dish after this description?? A smart dish...very fresh and wonderful flavor with every bite. I highly recommend without a second thought!

From cambria

At this point, my evening couldn’t have been more perfect! I was in a very relaxed and cozy ambiance, had the perfect company with amazing conversation... ironically enough, sharing more inspiration about my new culinary endeavors!! So being in that place of inspiration and feeling great, I thought nothing could top my evening. Boy, was I was wrong!

From cambria

Then came dessert!! Talk about a happy and memorable ending... though there was some pretty wonderful choices that evening, we went with what our very friendly server recommended: Berries atop a fluffy cloud (if you will) of mascarpone cheese and cream with white chocolate folded in... resting in a fresh and flaky puff pastry shell drizzled with a balsamic reduction and basil simple syrup!!! Need I say more?? Just recalling the decadence in my mouth makes me feel like I am recreating the calories in my body all over again!! But this dessert was worth all the calories it came with... there was absolutely no guilt resulting from this indulgence! This was simple, but truly a masterpiece that a genius chef concocted!! (and many of you know how discriminating my palette is especially when it comes to desserts!) :) I can only hope that when I get to visit this charming bistro once again they will be serving this same work of art!! Kudos to the chef!

From cambria

All in all, a truly memorable culinary experience! Very well prepared food... creative and the perfect fusion of flavors and textures! I will return to this town... precisely because it is the home of the Black Cat!!

Next time you are feeling like you need to get away...but you’re not quite sure where to venture to...wonder no more! Go visit chef/owner Deborah Scarborough and her very friendly staff... you will not be disappointed!! For all Los Angelinos, it is worth fighting Friday evening gridlock for... but you have to stay the night... take in the delights of this charming town... stop and smell the roses for a bit!

Visit the Black Cat’s webpage at: www.blackcatbistro.com
(Don’t forget to tell the chef who sent you!)…Cheers and bon appetit!!
